New Mitsubishi Pajero Brings Back the Multi Meter, Now Fully Digital

A month after confirming the Pajero’s surprise return, Mitsubishi has dropped a fresh teaser that gives off-road fans something specific to get excited about: the revival of the Multi Meter, reimagined for the digital age.

The Multi Meter was a beloved feature on earlier generations of the Pajero (sold as the Montero in some markets), and its comeback is a clear nod to the nameplate’s history as a serious off-roader dating back to the early 1980s. This time around, Mitsubishi is ditching the old triple-gauge analogue setup in favour of a fully digital display capable of showing a much wider range of information.

Drivers venturing off the beaten path will be able to monitor pitch and roll angles as before, but also altitude, compass heading, and left-right torque distribution — all in real time. Mitsubishi hasn’t confirmed whether this will be a dedicated screen, built into the instrument cluster, or folded into the infotainment system, though a standalone display would arguably make more sense for a feature meant to be glanced at quickly while tackling rough terrain rather than buried in a menu.

Importantly, the new Pajero isn’t just trading on nostalgia. It’s built on the ladder-frame platform shared with the Triton, and will come with proper 4WD capability to match. Mitsubishi appears intent on treating the Pajero name with the respect it’s due, positioning this as a true successor rather than repurposing the badge for something unrelated, a contrast to what happened with the Eclipse name in the past.

The flagship model is expected to break cover later this year, with sales starting in 2027. Mitsubishi has also signalled that this is just the first step in a broader Pajero lineup, with additional derivatives likely to follow underneath it. Whether the Multi Meter trickles down to those models or stays exclusive to the range-topper remains to be seen.

The Pajero’s return slots into a much larger turnaround plan at Mitsubishi, which has committed to launching 13 new models by early 2032, including five EVs and five hybrids. It’s a lot riding on one nameplate, but the Pajero has the pedigree to carry it: across four decades, it sold more than 3.25 million units in over 170 countries and regions. Whether this new generation can recapture that kind of global reach is the real question Mitsubishi will be looking to answer once it lands.
