Mitsubishi Triton Bi-Turbo Arrives in South Africa With More Power, Torque and Presence, Delivering 150kW and Super Select II 4WD as New Flagship

Mitsubishi Motors SA has expanded its Triton range with the introduction of the new Bi-Turbo derivative, which becomes the flagship of the lineup. The model brings 150kW of power, 470Nm of torque, and Mitsubishi’s Super Select II 4WD system, developed specifically for the South African market as the next chapter in the Triton’s local story.

“We are excited to welcome the Triton Bi-Turbo to our local line up, offering additional performance, refined driving dynamics and advanced technology,” says Lerato Nonyane, General Manager: Product & Marketing at Mitsubishi Motors South Africa (MMSA).

Alongside the extra power and torque, the Bi-Turbo brings sportier styling and improved safety through the fitment of the Mitsubishi Safety Sensing Suite. “The new additions to the Triton range have been done while retaining the products value for money characteristic, with extremely competitive pricing given the additional features and technology that are included as standard,” Nonyane explains.

The Triton Bi-Turbo builds on the model’s robust design language with a set of sporty elements that give it an imposing, tough-looking presence. The Dynamic Shield concept underpins the front-end design, featuring a three-dimensional front grille, fenders and lower protector, with three L-shaped LED daytime running lights working alongside three-light lower headlights for a distinctive look.

Large solid surfaces along the sides flow into T-shaped tail lights that emphasise the width of the rear end. Standard equipment on the Bi-Turbo now includes roof rails, a styling bar, heated door mirrors and an assisted rear tailgate for easier access to the load bin.

The biggest update sits under the bonnet. The 2.4-litre 4N16 DI-DC Bi-Turbo diesel engine and its two-stage turbocharger have been retuned to deliver 150kW at 3,500rpm and 470Nm between 1,500 and 2,750rpm, reshaping the driving experience while keeping the driveability the Triton is known for.

The Bi-Turbo setup pairs a smaller turbine for immediate low-speed response with a larger turbine that sustains high-end boost, improving acceleration and torque delivery across the full speed range. Power reaches the wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission, and the Bi-Turbo is offered exclusively with Mitsubishi’s Super Select II 4WD system, which includes a rear differential lock and seven selectable drive modes.

Unlike conventional part-time 4WD systems, Super Select II lets the driver select 4H on the move at speeds of up to 100 km/h, adding confidence when road surfaces turn wet, slippery or unpredictable. In heavy rain, on wet tar, gravel or other low-grip surfaces, 4H distributes drive between the front and rear wheels to support traction and stability, making the Bi-Turbo well suited to South African driving conditions where a routine drive can quickly become a wet-weather, gravel-road or towing challenge.

Suspension and handling updates keep the Triton balanced under the added power, while electric power steering supports more precise steering inputs. The Bi-Turbo carries a 3.5 tonne towing capacity and a 1,000kg payload rating.

Inside, the Triton Bi-Turbo adds premium touches designed to make every drive more comfortable. A leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear shift knob, synthetic leather seats with suede knit and quilting, and carpet flooring lift the interior finish, while dual-zone climate control, vanity mirrors with lids, an upper glove box and a dimming rear-view mirror round out the practical upgrades.

The infotainment system has been significantly upgraded, now featuring a nine-inch touchscreen Smartphone-Link Display Audio system, a seven-inch digital driver’s display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a six-speaker sound system.

The Triton Bi-Turbo gains a major safety upgrade through the Mitsubishi Safety Sensing Suite, which bundles Adaptive Cruise Control with steering switch, Automatic High Beam, Forward Collision Mitigation with pedestrian detection, Lane Change Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Warning, and front and rear parking sensors. A Multi Around Monitor system is also fitted.

As part of the broader 2026 range update, Mitsubishi Motors South Africa has also refreshed the Triton GLS with a darker exterior treatment. The fog lamp bezels, door handles, side steps, rear gate handle and garnish now come in matte black, while the front bumper garnish, rear bumper, door mirrors and 18-inch alloy wheels feature a metallic black finish, and the rear combination lamps’ inner housing has also been blacked out. The changes give GLS models a bolder look with no change to pricing.

Today, the Triton continues that legacy in some of the world’s most demanding environments. Team Mitsubishi Ralliart claimed overall victory at the 2025 Asia Cross Country Rally with the Triton rally bakkie, reinforcing the model’s strength, reliability and off-road capability.

For 2026, Team Mitsubishi Ralliart returns to the AXCR with a team of three Tritons, targeting a second consecutive title in one of Asia’s toughest cross-country events.
